A Tribute to a Life Well Lived: Honoring Mr. Godson Sunday Amaonyeze Nwoke (A.K.A. Sokiri or Dee Soo)

On September 15, 1913, in the serene village of Amankwu Mbutu-Okohia in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area, Imo State, a legend was born—Mr. Godson Sunday Amaonyeze Nwoke, fondly known as Sokiri or Dee Soo. His arrival into this world was marked by resilience, as he grew up without ever meeting his biological father, Mr. Okere Nwoke, who passed away before his birth. Raised by his mother and uncle, Mr. Ololo, Grandpa Godson exemplified the power of determination, love, and grace throughout his 111 remarkable years of life.

A Life Full of Love and Dedication

Grandpa Godson was a man who loved his family deeply. He found immense joy in our presence and always went the extra mile to ensure we felt loved and cared for. His industrious nature meant he never wanted to lack anything. He had a curious mind—if he saw something new in someone else’s home, he would inquire about it, and shortly after, he’d acquire it for himself.

He was a gifted storyteller, filling every moment spent with him with tales that were as engaging as they were enlightening. His stories often left us not just entertained, but enriched, as he shared lessons and wisdom through his words. Grandpa’s lively and cheerful personality created a warm, loving environment wherever he went.

We fondly remember the song he often sang to us, a tune that reflected his pride, resilience, and character:
"Abu m nnukwu mmadu n'ala nke m
A na m akuziri umuaka ife
I ga-elekwa anya watch mgba n'aka, I ga-amara udi mmadu m bu
Watch m gosiri gi
Watch m gosiri gi..."

A Man of Many Talents

Grandpa Sokiri was a jack of all trades and a master of many. His life was a testament to hard work and resourcefulness. He wore many hats throughout his life: a trader, a transporter, a building contractor, a bicycle repairer, and a vulcanizer. Beyond his professional ventures, he was also a passionate athlete, representing Ngor-Okpala in Imo State athletics during the late 1970s.

His hobbies brought him immense joy—running, storytelling, listening to music, and dancing were among his favorites. Grandpa’s vibrant personality made him a beloved figure in our family and the entire community.

A Legacy of Wisdom and Faith

As a devout Catholic, Grandpa prayed to God through Jesus Christ while maintaining respect for the chaplet he always wore. His unwavering faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and decisions.

He was a patient man who believed that everyone’s turn to lead would come with time. This principle was evident in his journey to becoming the oldest man in not just our village, but the entire community—a position that earned him profound respect.

Grandpa’s wisdom was often encapsulated in his words:

  • "A na m emegide mmadu" (I stand against wrongdoing).
  • "Onye no n'uwa kwuwa aka ya oto, zeere umunwaanyi ga-ebi ndu ogologo" (Whoever wishes to live long should live a peaceful life and avoid trouble with others).
  • "O biara igbu m, gburu onwe ya" (Anyone who comes to harm me ends up harming themselves).

Lessons and Values That Will Endure

Through his truthfulness, transparency, and unwavering belief in “live and let live,” Grandpa Sokiri taught us values that will guide us forever. He maximized every opportunity, never shied away from challenges, and reminded us that no task is truly unachievable.

Forever in Our Hearts

Grandpa’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and the pursuit of excellence. As a family, we will always cherish his memory—the stories he told, the lessons he imparted, and the love he showered upon us. He was not just a father and grandfather but a pillar of strength and inspiration to everyone who knew him.

Rest in peace, Grandpa. Your legacy lives on in our hearts and actions, and we are honored to have been blessed by your presence.

Lovingly remembered by the family of Mr. Godson Sunday Amaonyeze Nwoke (A.K.A. Sokiri or Dee Soo).
